It has not been proposed as far as I remember.

I am not sure what the problem is with an "XSI:ism" or what exactly that
is, but it would be fine to commit this in the sake of readability after
the release.

The autoconf manual (which is a kind of reference for system-portable
shell programming) only refers to signals by their numeric names, so
presumably there is or was some context in which the numeric names were
preferred.
