It should be possible to override them on the "make" command line under
tta/:

"make perl_conf_LIB_CFLAGS=... perl_conf_LDFLAGS=..."

- or similar.  These variables should be passed to "make" in all the
subdirectories and take priority over values that are already in
the Makefile.  Still a pain, but at least you could put that into
a shell script or something so you don't have to edit all the Makefiles
by hand.

In the future, we could change the checks under tta/m4/txi_perl_conf.m4
not to change any of the variables if they are already set.  Then the
user could do from the command line:

"./configure perl_conf_LIB_CFLAGS=... perl_conf_LDFLAGS=..."

to override default settings.
