That’s important for Maxima’s manual to display nice TeX-style formulas. 
Also, the HIGHLIGHT_SYNTAX option is useful if you want to have syntax 
highlighting of your code examples. It’s not currently enabled by 
default in Maxima’s manual, but I use it in my local builds.
