Bitmap images in info format

Since the newest version of Texinfo it is possible to include bitmap
graphics in the info format that can be viewed with Emacs.  (At
least I think so, I have been unable to install an Emacs version new
enough so far.)

Where must I place these PNG files?  In the same directory where my
.info.gz file is?

Background: Unfortunately RPM seems to compress all files in the
share/info directory implicitly.  This is a deficiency of rpm but
nevertheless I would delay the use of bitmaps if they really must in
the info/ dir.  (Almost no-one could see them anyway. ;-)
