I understand what "undefined" means, of course, but this is no
explanation.

Let's put it this way.  If you compile texinfo 4.6 with whatever
compiler you are using that is causing the trouble (I'm guessing that's
what you're doing, since you still haven't given the actual specifics of
your system, compiler, etc., etc.), does the same thing happen?

Anyway, this whole discussion is very frustrating, for both of us, I
would guess.  I think I will see if I can incorporate the gnulib alloc
stuff without too much trouble, which will presumably resolve it.

Sigh.
