It seemed to me that it might take some time to understand the internal
structure of recode, before one can add to the tables.  (Eg: what the
term "choosing a recoding path" means?)
And I wasn't willing to study this if Francis nas already discarded
(parts of) that approach.

I forgot about the details, thank you very much for clarification.

It seems that before starting any recode/iconv hacking, one should think
about the two programs. What is the role of each of them? Should they
merge or not?

Ideally, this would be discussed with Francois Pinard to understand the
overall situation...
