I don't like @r either, but it cannot be changed anymore.  Nobody
will think of "slanted" if one sees @s, and vice versa.  As far as I
know Texinfo would be the only markup language where "s" means
"slanted".

I think such an unimportant command can well have a verbose name.
Avoiding unnecessary abbreviations is typical of the GNU project
after all.
