    Some things are missing in the xml output of makeinfo that should be
    relevant for a LaTeX backend, for example @setchapternewpage,
    @smallbook, and maybe

There's no reason those (and everything else) should not be in the XML.
It should not be hard to add, although I don't plan to do it right now.

    Maybe there could be @latex and @iflatex constructs ?

This does not make sense to me unless makeinfo actually acquires a latex
backend. I would find it very weird to document "ok, there's @latex,
but it's only for the benefit of the XML output".

It should be possible to put the LaTeX commands into an @xml section, as
you described in your other message.

    add a TeX-->MathML routine to makeinfo instead.

Nevertheless, there are a number of programs which attempt to translate
(La)TeX math formulas into MathML (or images, or other things). Maybe
they could be helpful somehow. I think I've put links to most of them
on the (incredibly chaotic) http://tug.org/interest.html.

Cheers,
karl
