I think, the problem is with 'ifmslide'.  For the footline
(containing the date) it uses \today instead of \@date, and
only the latter is set with the macro \date.  Therefore, the
solution to your problem is to redefine \today instead of
setting \date:
                     \def\today{July 26 2007}
should do the job.
