I know this is very old, but I'll answer for the record...

That's not the only conclusion...

True, \pause doesn't work inside the slide environment.

But, as for prosper, it's no problem to wrap a whole 
slide inside a \stepwise command, like so:

  \begin{slide}

    \section{A list environment}
  

    \step
    {%
      \begin{description}
      \item[foo.] \step{bar.}
        \step{\item[baz.]} \step{qux.}
      \end{description}
    }
    \vfill\vspace*{0pt}
  \end{slide}
}

Two things to pay attention to:

1) Slide contents are centered vertically by default. Hence,
   when adding vertical material as above, the slide has to be 
   `shoved up' by explicitly adding \vfill\vspace*{0pt}.
   
2) It seems that if such a `wrapped' slide forms the end of a
   presentation, or if two wrapped slides follow each other,
   a spurious empty page is created.

I'll look into both issues further, trying add some explicit
pdfscreen support to texpower sorting this out, when making 
updated versions of all examples and demos for the first
alpha release.
