Using a new counter

Friends,

I am trying to do something IN have never done before. I am trying to insert numbered boxes in a long document. For this, I have defined a new counter called 'box' using the command \newcounter{box}. Now, I need to understand how I should use it when I create boxes. I create boxes using a combination of framebox and parbox. Perhaps, there is some package that will do all this for me.

Please give me any information that will help me do this.
