Request

Respected Sir,
                       I am preparing my article in document class "
ams article" but  I have some doubts.
Please help me to make clear the doubts.
They are as follow:
(i) What is the meaning of the line " Write the latex code in actual
paragraph, with empty lines between them."
(ii) How can I number each equation or some equation in a set of
equations  using
\begin{equation}
\begin{split}
\end{split}
\end{equation}
please do not use \begin{eqnarray}  \end{eqnarray}
