Initial Comment:
My mailcap file contains the line
application/pdf; evince 
(with a space at the end of the line)
When clicking, in a dvi file, on a link to the file "/u/ihalu_01/Paper/CL.analyt.pdf", I get the message

Command "/bin/sh -c evince/u/ihalu_01/Paper/CL.analyt.pdf" exited with error code 127
/bin/sh: evince/u/ihalu_01/Paper/CL.analyt.pdf: No such file or directory

So appearently, xdvi throws away the space at the end of the mailcap line. (Anyway, according to "man mailcap", the right thing to do would be to pipe the file into evince instead of attaching the name at the end of the line.)

Thanks for the report, I can reproduce this, looks like an error in the
mailcap parser.

That the file isn't passed via a pipe as specified by rfc1524 is by design
(the xdvi GUI makes it difficult to capture the output of piped commands,
see the print dialog, and it's a rarely used feature ...), it should try to
pass it normally as an argument if '%s' isn't specified.
