xdvi-motif very slow in Debian 10.4

I had been using xdvi-motif for many years in 32-bit Scientific Linux
6.10. I very much preferred it compared to acroread because it is much
faster, and updates automatically.

I upgraded to 64-bit Debian 10.4.

I have versions 22.84.10 and 22.84.16. They both were very fast, and
are now very slow.

I just now re-made 22.84.16, and it's identical to the one I had.
"file" says it's a 32-bit executable.

Why is it so slow?

Can I compile it as a 64-bit program? None of the "configure --help"
output has "64".
