xdvik not displaying eps graphics

I tried the default installed ones /usr/bin/xdvi (22.87.03) and /usr/bin/xdvi-xaw (22.87.03), /usr/local/texlive/2016/bin/id86- linux/xdvi (22.87.03), and xdvi-motif.bin from my own compilation (22.84.16). None displayed graphics. I ran xdvipdfmx and the graphics were in the pdf file (I have pdf graphics created from eps using epstopdf). They also appear in the pdf file if I use pdflatex. All of the xdvi's I tried are also very slow (but that was mentioned in a separate message).
