Thanks a lot Miroslav for the quick reply; much appreciated! We will try the 'distance' parameter as you suggest. Out of curiosity, I wonder if there a way to configure chrony to immediately stop serving time to NTP clients as soon as there are no reachable upstream references (or jump to high stratum level)? I was expecting chrony to fallback to stratum 10 but this is not what is happening. It's expected in your configuration. The default threshold for switching to the local mode is 1 second of root distance (root delay / 2 + root dispersion).
