IMO, the cleanest solution that works for me now (after adding a 
D tool (dmd) to tools/), is using
:usetool dmd

Of course, I would like the recipe to be compiler agnostic so I'd
rather use something like
:import d_lang or similar or nothing at all, just specify a target and
sources.

When it comes to the rest of your suggestions, I would guess that
it's the best longterm solution although I don't think I know aap
well enough to comment any more.
