I agree it's horribly ugly. I hadn't really thought of CPPFLAGS - in 
particular, since those flags are also used when compiling things (and I 
don't know what -MG would do then).

Sure. My standard test case is building libkpilot.la (I haven't tried 
installing it recently, though). It doesn't do complicated qt stuff that I 
need to figure out as well.
