PREFIX and DESTDIR not working

Hi, 

Despite the thread about PREFIX and DESTDIR always working,
I cannot create one test scenario where they work.  What
am I doing wrong? 

aap --version
A-A-P recipe executive version 1.053; released 2004 Jan 07 13:32:39 GMT 

test.aap
TRYTHIS = jnk2 

aap -f test.aap DESTDIR=/tmp/jnk123
all:
 :copy Makefile.in /tmp/.
#  @install_files("/tmp","Makefile.in",'0644')
 @install_files(_no.TRYTHIS,"Makefile.in",'0644') 

[[email protected] build]$ aap -f test.aap DESTDIR=/tmp/jnk123 

Makefile.in is not placed inside /tmp/jnk123 

So, PREFIX and DESTDIR always work for :copy and @install_files
if they are explicitly made to work??? 

Like, TRYTHIS=$DESTDIR$PREFIX/jnk2 

??
