If you can build up the list of files to be transferred in advance, scp 
allows you to provide it with multiple files to be transferred.

Alternatively, you could look into how fcp (and fsh) work.

(I'm not sure if these require support at the other end, though.)
If fcp is present on a system, aap could default to using this instead 
of scp.
