For Vim I use an error number for the messages, so that they can still
be recognized after translating:
	"E79: Cannot expand wildcards"
	"E79: Kann \"wildcards\" nicht erweitern"
	"E79: Impossible de d=E9velopper les m=E9tacaract=E8res"
	"E79: No puedo expandir los comodines."

If you can send me a patch I can include this.  It's not a generic
solution, but if you have this problem then others probably will too.
