Since Bram already has KDE on his system, kate is there too. It's not exactly compatible with vim, though (although kvim exists too, and I believe work is underway to make it a KTextEditor implementation, so that you can plug it into the kate shell as well). The plugin, unfortunately, is in kdeaddons - I don't think there's a port for that, though. I can provide a tarball if needed. From other docbook folks: "jedit is worth a try, if you're editor agnostic, I was quite impressed with it, it's got lots of lookup and autocomplete stuff, but a bit tricky to get it working with the right DTD's."
