FWIW, I don't use the id field in XML as a category name, so I don't mind if 
it becomes an attribute.

I use the id field in the C element datatype as a place to temporarily store 
category info, but that's an entirely different matter (and also a temporary 
solution).

So, I propose either restrict it and make it a attribute, or allow full 
freedom in a separate tag protected by CDATA.
