Forgot to give my 2 eurocents on the discussion. 

In Belgium, foxes are associated with being sly, cunning and devious, so a 
slightly negative connotation. Owls are a symbol of both wisdom and stupidity 
(we are a strange people, aren't we?). Elephants are being associated with a 
good memory, though.

So, from my cultural perspective at least, an elephant would be the way to go.

On a slightly more philosophical note, I also don't think that being smart or 
wise has all that much to do with having a good memory or remembering a lot 
of facts ;-)
