I agree. But I just wanted to know - if I will provide this two new functions 
in core and every item will have this new "int category" field - if this will 
be enough to make easy use of categories in GUI. Just want make sure I didn't 
miss something from my non-GUI programmer perspective. :)

I totally agree, and I will try to always keep it that way.

Yes, exactly - that's why this idea is not so great. :)
But on first reviews (especially first and second) this data ("guessed 
difficulty") doesn't work so well.
On first presentation elements of "high" difficulty could be scheduled closer.
Well... on the other hand: if one well grade himself/herself (e.g. on first 
presentation while picking a grade also take into account element 
difficulty), then this proposed new variable seems totally needless.
Maybe indeed, instead of implementing it and bloating code and everything, 
there should be a good manual and user should know how and what grades should 
choose.
