Oops, I use memaid core for testing my superkaramba widget. Can't remember 
when I last updated it, but I think my data is still fine...

In order to avoid having to change the fileformat again when in the far future 
one can switch caterogies on and off, does it make sense to already introduce 
a boolean 'active' in the fileformat? (which is currently always 1)

For me it looks fine. Does FOX allow you to use drop-down combo boxes? That 
way you could also select a recently typed category from that drop-down box.
