Hmm, 8 seems a bit small, but it's your choice. 

I don't think it will make a huge difference in file size if you just use a 
char to store a single bool (I think that's what C++ does too, if I'm not 
mistaken).

As long as were not talking about thousands of categories, it's not a big 
waste.

But once again, it's up to you ;-)
