I did this:

$cd $HOME
$mkdir test
$kmemaid

  Then I chose File->New and selected test. Still I have no "Memorize"
  menu, only "File", "Settings" and "Help".

  I am running on Debian, if anyone thinks it would be useful, I could
  provide ldd output.
