I also came across this dependency on Perl 5.16. This was before I
noticed that there are two SD JSON grabbers, but by the time I did
notice I had already upgraded Perl. I'm doing this writeup in case it is
useful to others.

I know that this is the developer list and that you guys probably
already know all of this. I'm nevertheless posting here in order to give
you the opportunity to pick/endorse an approach for users to follow.

The version of Perl that is packaged in the distro that my backend runs
(which is Ubuntu 12.04; I will upgrade when 16.04.1 comes out) is
5.14.2. Rather than risking upgrading this system-wide I found out that
it is possible to install another Perl version that is local to a given
user account (in my case the mythtv user, since this is the user that
runs the xmltv grabbers).

This is done using perlbrew as described here:

Those instructions should be executed while being logged in as the user
that requires the higher Perl version.

XMLTV should then be installed within that Perl environment. I did so by
downloading the nightly snapshot from:

http://snapshot.xmltv.org/

Installation instructions are contained within the README file.

The first step (perl Makefile.PL) will identify a number of missing
dependencies which first need to be installed before continuing with the
following steps. Installing those dependencies is done by means of cpan.
(I actually used cpanm but it can also be done using cpan). Instructions
here (refer to the section titled Install Perl Modules using CPAN
automatically):

Probably best to re-run perl Makefile.PL once more to check that all
dependencies have indeed been installed before continuing with the rest
of the XMLTV installation instructions.
