I believe this was initially discussed back in March of this year
(including at least one alternative).

In the end, I agree with others, the release (and the tag and
the hash) is the easy git way forward as, perhaps except for
the gentooers, most users of the project just download the
release from their upstream distro these days and run it
(they presume the packager will figure it out for them), and
many upstream packagers just pull the latest release to
build from.
