Git tries to be smart about such things, but for those
that do not want to remember the three commands
to do it (mv; git-rm; git-add), there is always git-mv
(a convenience function). And as with much else, if
you work it hard enough, you can likely confuse git.
Commit early and often is usually the best approach
to keep you (and git) happier and keep the history
understandable. I personally dislike seeing a single
commit that include 20 mostly unrelated changes
that could be (and should be) separated into
individual commits for history purposes. [FD: I have
been guilty of the single commit to rule them all
practice at times, especially for new development
before I bring the project under a VCS. But I am
trying to reform.]
