Which grabber are you using? Is the Umlaut problem occuring because
the grabber is not correctly encoding the character or because your OS
does not support them at all?

Display names of channels seen in XMLTV output are usually created in
one of a few ways:

i) hard-coded in the grabber itself;
ii) included in listings data downloaded by the grabber (i.e. when
scraping a webpage or in pre-compiled XML data);
iii) included in a supplemental file that the grabber uses (e.g. a
channel_ids file).

I am only familiar with the uk_rt and _fr grabbers. In the case of
uk_rt the channel display names are controlled (by me) in a file that
the grabber retrieves at run-time. In the case of uk_rt it is possible
to edit this file locally and control display names yourself, but this
is not the case for all grabbers.
