That is an error that I have not seen yet myself. Usually the grabber
dies when it receives error 500 from the DirecTV webserver.

Looks like you are doing nothing wrong. The grabber has not received
much attention after it was added around four years ago. According to
the automatic tests, there have been issues for a long time. (as in
returning some data only once every week or so, see
http://www.crustynet.org.uk/~xmltv-tester/wheezy/nightly/ )

There is no premade binary package for MaxOSX, yet. But there is a
package in Fink and you can easily install from sources yourself.

Maybe the original authors can help you get tv_grab_dtv_la in order.
