   I can only guess that the Radio Times servers have changed IP addresses. 
  When I got home to check in more detail, I found that nslookup was giving 
me a different IP address on machines that had been left running for a while 
(like my PVR) than ones that hadn't (like a laptop).

   Bizarrely, I was getting intermittently different results on my main PC, 
sometimes getting the right IP but mostly the wrong one.  And the wrong one 
did respond to requests but served up the “dead” files I described.

   Once I flushed the DNS entries out of both boxes, it all started working 
as expected.
