I have now captured a packet trace as follows: $ tcpdump -w tv_grab_sd_json.pcap host json.schedulesdirect.org Kevin or Robert, would either of you be interested in taking a look at that? I of course don't want to post it publicly because doing so would leak my SD credentials. I can't draw any conclusions from the trace since the juicy bits are encrypted but I do see a flurry of retransmissions and the like; perhaps this might be of interest to you?
