It very much depends on how much the maintainer wants to change=20 lout. The minimalist version is just to collect existing patches=20 and be ready for any incoming patches/issues, and Jeff is right=20 lout is pretty close to be done, so I wouldn=E2=80=99t expect much after= =20 the fist hard work to organize existing improvements. Unless, the maintainer decides that it is worthy to bring lout=20 to the twenty-first century, which would probably means some=20 larger changes: switching to UTF-8, generating PDF, and using=20 system fonts =C3=A1 la XeTeX/LuaTeX (using FreeType, I guess, if not=20 going all the way to HarfBuzz). That would require plenty of=20 work, and lout would get external dependencies (aka need for=20 constant maintenance), but I don=E2=80=99t think it is super-important.=20 Even with the limit given by PostScript and basically just=20 European languages (did anybody manage to do anything in Lout=20 with CJK/Indic languages, or even worse Thai?), it is still can=20 be pretty useful for many.
