OT: basic linux help

As most of you know by corp policy we are moving to Linux from FreeBSD 
and  since I  am not very familure with Linux yet I want to know how to 
deal with the following message I get when ever aegis gives me an error:

    aegis: Warning: You are seeing the short form of the error 
messages.  The
    message catalogues may not have been installed correctly, or you may
    need to check the settings of your LC_ALL and LANG environment
    variables.

I have no idea what either env var does or how to set it.
