Ah, that's a book I had not previously heard of --
probably because it appears to be long out
of print.  The reviews on Amazon suggest it
might be worth getting hold of a second-hand
copy.

I think I have now found what I was looking for:
"Transaction-Oriented Configuration Management: A Case Study".

It's an SEI technical report that describes Sun NSE.
