I would dearly love to see something based off some standard (free)
distributed version control, build system and continuous integration
server, but that was properly packaged and integrated to implement an
Aegis-like workflow.

Certainly it is possible to "roll your own" but that's tedious, error-prone
and would probably provide partial functionality.

I constantly miss the completeness and "sanity" of out-of-the-box Aegis in
my team's projects (which use a hodge-podge combination of GIT,
Redmine+Gitosis, and CruiseControl.rb to create a very weak imitation of an
Aegis system).

For a build system, I found that while GNU make is far from ideal, if
pushed to its limits it can provide a "reasonable" solution (w/o recursive
make) in "most cases". And it has the great advantage of being everywhere.
