Lionel, what version of tla was he using?

Also  is his project public?  Or if he is willing to share a copy of
his archive and his  working directory with me or someone to try to
reproduce this problem...

Else the output of tla abrowse, tla tree-id in his working directory
would also be useful.

What is the editor that he was using?
