Most likely that's your problem.  Please upgrade to GNU m4 1.4.2.
GNU m4 1.4 has some serious bugs, which are particularly likely to be
triggered on Solaris, and which have symptoms similar to those you're
observing.  (GNU m4 1.4.1 fixed some of these bugs but not all.)
