No they have to pay ;)

No - many of our customers (certainly the more commercially important
ones) lock the client machine down so regedit/regedt32 cannot run (but
that doesn't stop MSI installers from setting values).

Hm doesn't look like I actually did those changes...

I think that is OK - but in time the best approach is to migrate to the
CVSAPI so that the registry settings are not read at all..
