I want to avoid the "Type" as a name however not to confuse with the Type column in Windows Explorer which is related to the file's extention. How about "Encoding" then? The idea comes from CVSNT manual page (13.4 Substitution modes): http://www.cvsnt.org/wiki/CvsChapter110 Relevant CVS manual page for comparison (12.4 Substitution modes): http://www.cvshome.org/docs/manual/cvs-1.11.10/cvs_12.html#SEC102 CVSNT nicely divides encoding from keyword substitution and provides more of each but it's still looking compatible with CVS ones so we can easily take that into account. The "Encoding" column would explain the files as either "Text", "Binary" or "Unicode". The keyword substitution would still be shown in the "Option" column just like it is now so we can have both the user-friendly and technically-correct information. Since the columns can be moved around people can decide for themself which column they want to see more. Not sure where to place the column initinally. In fact some users will expect just that - we should draw attention to some particular states more than others. Two most important ones are surely "Unknown" and "Conflict". We can implement it with "priority sorting" and see if there are any complains or suggetions and then act appropriate. I see the State column a little bit like Timestamp column in that respect.
