FWIW, the approach MacCvs takes here is to only update the browser
windows when they are the frontmost window. That way an update of a
flat view (which sometimes takes some time) does not happen when other
windows are up front.
[Of course the best solution would be to asynchronously update the
browsers during idle time, so when you switch to a browser it's already
updated and no delay happens due to the asynchronousness of the update]
