Our setup:
client: Windows - W2K, XP, or Win 2003 server.
        WinCVS 2.0.3.1 (Build 1)
        cvs.exe is CVSNT 2.0.51d

server: Centos 2.6.11
        CVS 1.12.13

Using pserver connection.

Question: Is there a way to get the branch tip revision without
doing a checkout?

We use Apache, with viewcvs.cgi, which will return just the revisions
on a given branch, so I think there must be a way to get the tip or
last revision on a given branch.

Using native rcs on the server I can:
rlog <file> | grep <branch>
get first two numeric fields
rlog <file> | grep <first_two_fields>
the last "revision <revision_number>" is the revision on the tip of
the branch.

Is there a more straightfoward way to get it?

I want to be get "cvs diff" between two branches (processing all
files in a module), but "cvs diff" requires revision numbers. Branch
names will only give the branch point. Once I have the diff, there
is further processing to determine lines of code changes.

Thanks for any input.
