CVS Root : No such file or directory

I have a cvs repository on another windows machine. Up to recently I
was using wincvs1.2. I have just installed wincvs 2.2.0.4, and cvs no
longer works. (I did have the crash caused by tcl84.dll which I removed)
If I go to a directory containing a checked out module, I can see the
files that have changed highlighted in red etc, but if I try to commit
any changes I get following message in wincvs command window "cvs
[commit aborted]: Local access to network share not supported (Use -N
to override this error)."
If I run cvs status in the directory, I get "/CVSROOT: No such file or
directory". However I cannot set cvsroot in preferences menu any more.
Is there anywhere I can find an explanation of what must be changed in
order to use wincvs 2.0.2.4 ?
