WinCVS 2.0.2-4 -- file will not "edit"

I am using WinCVS2.0.2-4 with cvsnt 2.5.03.x. I am running the WinCVS
on a remote client. When I checked in a file, the file became read-
only. I tried to do the Trace..Edit command, but it did not change the
permission to write. I had to physically change it in the file system,
which is a real pain. Any idea what is happening? (I am also running
NetBeans 5.0 -- cvs integration works -- but I shut it down before
attempting this).
