connect to 127.0.0.1((null)):2402 failed error

I'm trying to set up MacCVSX 3.3b2 on both a MacBook Pro (10.4.11) and
new iMac (10.5.2). Have been using 3.3a2 on the MacBook Pro with no
problems, but with b2 I get the following on trying to checkout a
module using local:
"cvsnt checkout: connect to 127.0.0.1((null)):2402 failed: Connection
refused"

I've turned off firewalls and tried configuring ports 2401-2402 for
CVS, but to no avail. I'm starting to suspect this is an inherent
problem with this release (which I think I have to use, if I run OS X
10.5). Has anyone else seen this, and better yet, solved the problem?
