Invoking command dialogs from inside a macro ?

I am writing a Python macro to automate the process of updating a file,
committing it and then tagging it.  I have it all working but it would
be much nicer if I could  access the Commit dialog's history of previous
commit messages.

Ideally I would like to be able to invoke the standard Commit dialog
from inside my macro and read whatever commit message the user decided
upon.

Is there any way to do this ?
