The version number of CVS would be a good start, different versions of CVS have different support forums. the command 'cvs ver' in a checked out sandbox will tell you the version of the server and the client.

CVS 2.x - CVSNT (NoT CVS) for linux/mac/unix/windows
CVS 1.x - NONGNU CVS (usually linux, sometimes mac)
TortoiseCVS 1.x - this is a gui not CVS at all, it 'uses' CVS
WinCVS - this is a gui not CVS at all, it 'uses' CVS
and lots more...
